Common Brake Problems

 

Some of the most common brake problems include soft brake pedals, worn brake pads, and problems with the master cylinder. If your brake pedal sinks to the floor when you push on it, you likely have a leak. This could be a fluid leak or an air leak. Both are dangerous and should be repaired as soon as possible.

Brake pads must be replaced every 50,000 miles on average. Some vehicles may need them replaced sooner or later, though. The best rule of thumb is to inspect your brake pads every now and then to make sure they are not worn down. If you hear a metallic scraping or screeching noise when you brake, see a mechanic right away. This is caused by the pads being so worn down that the metal is rubbing against metal. Not only is this unsafe, but it can warp your rotors, requiring costly repair and sometimes replacement.

 

Wobbling or vibration when stopping can also indicate a worn rotor. However, if you car pulls to one side when braking, you likely have a caliper problem. When you bring your car in for brake repair, it’s best to let your mechanic know exactly what you have been experiencing. Sometimes a brake problem may actually be an alignment issue or suspension problem.
